Fresh from Hosier Lane, 13th post

The vibe of Hosier is constantly changing. Culture Kings a new store has opened up, smack bang in the middle of the lane-way pumping out pop music and selling the "latest" fashion. The only good part about this is the crowds it brings to Hosier. However the major negative effect is the commodification of the Melbourne street art, graffiti scene. This store is primarily marketing itself on the surrounding painted walls. This is a great example of how capitalism subconsciously infiltrates public space and completely fucks with free unrestricted creative energy.

One of the rarer styles with outlines cutting back into the letters. A similar style  is adopted by Crime Wave.
Rare as hen's teeth to see a piece without a black outline.

Thought bubbles on Hosier Lane

Lush is one of those unique graffiti artists which is always pushing the conformity envelope open to new ideas and concepts. He often mocks himself through self-deprecating humor. Lushsux his blog on tumblr makes everyone question why does he suck and it deliberately generates attention, subconsciously. He has brought a lot of attention to the scene, which in itself is another blog post. I don't like a lot of his work and think in many ways he perpetuates an all to common misogynistic attitude amongst writers. The sexual objectification of woman in his work, is absoutely fucked up. As a a society we need to be continuously pushing gender equality.
Mocking the superficial social media world, where everyone needs to take a photo (selfie-wank) to somehow justify their existence in this increasingly homogenized world.

Making fun of tourists that come to Hosier lane and who don't attempt to understand the culture and just see what is surface deep.

Interview with anonymous writer

What was your inspiration?
"Mate got into graffiti 1993 and I started writing in 1994"

Whats changed in the scene since then?
"Paints a lot better now, writers used to rack their paint and now most of them pay for it"

When did graffiti peak in Melbourne?
"graffiti started 83 and peaked in 92, but graffiti is having a resurgence in popularity through street art"

What advice would you have for a toy writer?
"Learn the rules as you go. You don't want to cap or start beef with older established crews or you will get your head kicked in. There is hurdles to overcome when your establishing a name for yourself, obliviously the police. You've got to think of a good name (good letters help) and establish good reputation through doing panels. After a you get to a certain skill level you should be able to write any letter in the alphabet."
